The Anchor Exhibitions of Stellenbosch Triennale 2025
From the Vault. In the Current. On the Cusp. Three exhibitions, three timelines, one continuous breath through history.
At Stellenbosch Triennale 2025, we enter a Rehearsal for Breathing, a curatorial concept that urges us to reflect on how we inhale and exhale through time - acknowledging the past, embracing the present, and imagining the future. This year's Triennale features three major anchor exhibitions that navigate this temporal flow:
From the Vault—An excavation of the past.
In the Current—An interrogation of the now.
On the Cusp—A vision of what is yet to come.
Together, these exhibitions create a map of artistic expression that is both a pulse and a pause - a reminder that history is not just something we look back on, but something we live and breathe.
From the Vault:
Housed at Stellenbosch University Museum and Rupert Museum, From the Vault brings historical works into the present, re-examining the role of archives, museum collections, and cultural memory.
In the Current:
Located at Oude Libertas, In the Current captures the urgency of now. Featuring artists at the zenith of their careers, this exhibition pulses with the immediacy of contemporary practice.
On the Cusp:
Also found at Oude Libertas, On the Cusp introduces the voices of emerging artists pushing the boundaries of form, materiality, and meaning. These artists stand on the threshold, exploring new methodologies, new conversations, and new ways of being.
Together, these three exhibitions remind us that breathing is an act of survival and resistance. We breathe through history, through moments of rupture and reconciliation, through the past, present, and future.
Join us from 19 February to 30 April 2025 as we enter a rehearsal space for collective breathing, where art becomes both the inhale and the exhale of our times.
