ST2025 | Illustrated Guide Live Brief
Education Progamme
Stellenbosch Triennale is proud to present a collaboration in partnership with The Stellenbosch Academy of Design. Education and the facilitation of career opportunities in the creative industry are key pillars of the Stellenbosch Triennale. The Academy’s final-year illustration students were presented with a unique opportunity - to depict the creation of the Stellenbosch Triennale art installations through the lens of future artists.

The students are majoring in applied illustration, as part of the three-year Bachelors in Visual Communication at The Academy, under the guidance of Tamara Weetman. The programme focuses on creative and industry-related practical knowledge and skills in combination with academic theory that truly sets the Academy graduates apart in the South African job market.
The live brief entailed the students visiting the Oude Libertas precinct, Stellenbosch University Museum and the Rupert Museum to observe and engage with the artists at work. The result was an illustration of the student’s interpretation of the artwork and installations. The students took a step into the world of the Triennale artists, to experience their process of creation. With the freedom to create their interpretations in their own style, the illustrations form more of a conversation with the installation pieces than a direct representation.

This brief challenged the students not only in terms of their artistic skill, but to observe, to think critically, to conceptually develop and engage in dialogue with the already interpreted. Art through the lens of future artists allowed their creative expression to take centre stage, rather than shy away from the spotlight of current established artists. The incredible works created by the students are a testament to their talent, their passion for the arts and the incredibly bright future of the South African art world.
This brief was the brainchild of Academy alumni and now co-founder of Jumpin’ the Gun, Michelle Clack. Private Clients by Old Mutual Wealth generously sponsored the printing of an illustrated guide, beautifully put together by the Stellenbosch Academy team. This publication in turn also serves as a catalogue of the works created for the Stellenbosch Triennale 2025.
