Triennale 2020 – Imagining a New Future

Word is out. At a recent public announcement, it was revealed that the first Stellenbosch Triennale will commence in February 2020, confirming the town’s position as a leading arts centre on the global stage. Melvyn Minaar elaborates on all that the display of art from Africa will mean for the cultural identity of this South African dorp.

What is a Triennale – and why is Stellenbosch hosting one?

You might previously heard of a biennale. “…a critical site of experimentation in exhibition-making, offering artists, curators, and spectators a vital alternative to museums and other similar institutions whose institutional inertias do not allow them to respond with immediacy and flexibility to contemporary art’s development.” – Filipovic, van Hal, and Ovstebo 2010. A Triennale, lives and thrives by the same concept. However, it’s instituted every three years.

Stellenbosch Triennale to place creativity at the service of society

It has been 26 years since the first democratic elections in South Africa and with daily revelations of corruption and reports of violence threatening to destabilise the country, artists are stepping forward in an attempt to use creativity, imagination and public space as a meeting point in engaging with the past, present and future. The Stellenbosch Triennale, which will kick off in 2020, aims to “place creativity at the centre of society, as a convergence point where we are deliberate about imagining ourselves.”
