Natural Daughter

Natural Daughter

Photographic Installation

Based on a unique analysis of historical iconography and my family's oral accounts, in “Natural Daughter” I bring to light possible hypotheses about my great-great-grandmother's origins. There are indications that she was born around 1855 on a coffee plantation in Vassouras, in rural Rio de Janeiro, considered the epicenter of enslavement in 19th century Brazil.

I will also be presenting another work called “Water is a time machine”. It is a multilayered project surrounding my family members through various timelines, including personal documents that belonged to my mother, her calendars and journals from the 1970s, and an account of her death in 2011, which is the central piece and backbone of this work. Comprised of a fiction book, a video installation and a performance, it explores the intersections between literature and the visual arts.
