Sound Installation
I’m a painter working across multiple mediums exploring the continuity between ecology, infrastructure, and architecture. My abstract works are visual and material systems used to construct fusions of surface tension, movement, scale, real and finite space. With an emphasis on the ways Black and Brown bodies perceive and negotiate space as information, I look to spatial liberation strategies from historical and contemporary perspectives, seeking to uncover new understandings of the potential for more livable geographies.
I consider spatial relations an urgent question both historically and in the present day. My project here engages with architectual sculpture and audio compositions that features fables written and read by my mother D. Soyini Madison with a collection of field recordings and archival sounds pulled from historical abolitionist and women's rights speeches from around the world. Embracing this indeterminacy of live speaking, I think through how the thresholds of sounds translate generationally and through water. I’m interested in experimenting with sound that resonates in liberation and world-building. Abstracting the sound space between spoken languages, I’ve centered augmentation as an organizing principle to create a combination of audio that speaks to the unstable environmental relationship between development, perception, geologic time, and possibility.
