Indonesia

B. 1992

Wayan Sumahardika is a writer, director, and theater maker born in Denpasar, 1992. His artistic practice moves at the intersection of dance, art forms, and cultural studies to consider the relationship between the experience of watching a performance and social reality through a site-specific, repertoire-archive, and speculative approach. Suma is active as the artistic director of the Mulawali Institute, a cross-disciplinary performance study and production institution that often collaborates with artists, researchers, residents, and indigenous communities. He also initiated B-PART (Bali Performing Arts Meeting), a contemporary art event that seeks to consider Bali as a site for performance creation as well as a transit space for ideas and knowledge across cultures. Currently, Suma is interested in exploring the dynamics of tradition, rereading history, the reality of tourism, and his reflections on life around him.
